At first, I was super nervous about trying to talk to the elderly. Myself, along with a few other guys from the same youth group, first embarked on the journey to Brook Haven Manor. When we got there we all took a deep breath as we had no idea what we were doing – prior to our departure from the church we had no knowledge of what our ministry was going to be.
God proved to be working all around our group as we went in and started talking to the ladies and men inside. At first we had no idea what to do, some gave us weird looks and we attempted to play a few songs on the piano, which could have went better. After a few minutes that seemed to drag on forever, we started a game which was more what us guys could do.
We got to know many of the wonderful people there, they all had amazing stories and all had a life of their own, there was a real connection and appreciation among them towards us. I could tell that they enjoyed having young teenagers mingle with them to reignite that spark which made them feel alive.
I learned many things and they all had great advice, a few who were firm believers in God said how proud they were that we, as a youth group, were going out of our way to meet a diverse group of people on our mission trip.
